Preparedness Tip
Mark May on your calendar as your annual reminder to review—and practice—your emergency plan. Napa County’s preparedness calendar and local Fire Safe Councils are great sources for current resources, events, and guidance.
Together, we can help keep Napa Valley safe, informed, and ready.
Each May, Napa County recognizes Wildfire Awareness Week, a time to come together as a community to reduce wildfire risk, prepare for evacuations, and strengthen our resilience across the Napa Valley.
Why May Matters
May is officially designated as Wildfire Awareness Month in Napa County. As fire season approaches, this is the perfect time to review evacuation zones, update emergency plans, and take practical steps to protect homes, families, and neighborhoods.
Key Steps to Prepare
Know Your Evacuation Zone
Every Napa Valley resident should know their evacuation zone, primary and secondary routes, and nearby safe areas. Practice your evacuation plan with everyone in your household—including pets—so no one is caught off guard.
Have a Complete Emergency Plan
A strong plan includes:
- Where you’ll go if told to evacuate
- How household members will reconnect if separated
- How you’ll receive emergency alerts and share information
Make sure plans account for seniors, children, people with disabilities, and animals.
Practice Firewise Living
Firewise principles help homes survive wildfire. Focus on:
- Creating and maintaining defensible space
- Reducing fire‑prone vegetation
- Hardening homes with ember‑resistant materials
Small actions—clearing gutters, trimming trees, storing firewood away from structures—can make a big difference.
Get Involved Locally
Community action saves lives. Participate in Fire Safe Councils, attend preparedness workshops, and support projects that improve fuel reduction, roadside clearance, and safe evacuation routes throughout Napa County.
How to Take Action This May
- Attend Wildfire Awareness events in your town—look for drills, safety talks, and community inspections.
- Schedule a Firewise home inspection to identify risks and get practical recommendations.
- Volunteer or donate to local mitigation efforts that reduce hazardous fuels and improve evacuation safety.
